I've done a little more looking on this topic.
You should NOT do this if your shotgun's barrel is choked. This technique was used at the turn of the last century, and barrel designs have changed.
It is okay to do on a straight through barrel, not the choked ones - which if you don't know, there should be something written on your barrel. If not, try sticking a shell into the muzzle, and if it won't fit, don't try cut shot.
